You probably wouldn’t expect to find a chocolate factory on a remote beach in Bali, but that’s exactly what Charlie’s Chocolate Factory in Karangasem is. Located just 15 minutes north of Candidasa in the small village of Jasri, several wacky bamboo structures lie nestled below swaying coconut trees.
The factory was built by a US expat named what else but, Charlie. Cocoa beans grown locally on the island are cold pressed to make healthy, raw, dark chocolate. With a cocoa content of 85%, the chocolate is also rich in magnesium and full of anti-oxidants.
Be prepared for free Bali chocolate tours and sampling sessions as the staff bring you around the unique ‘smurf hut’ – armed with a sampling tray so you may indulge in some premium Balinese chocolate.
After tasting the chocolates, head out to the other attractions in the compound – like a giant swing where you and your kids can have tons of fun. (Older kids only as it might be too dangerous for the little ones.)
